Dance Shoes & Gear in Perth

Quality gear can make a big difference in a dancer’s comfort and performance. We take the guesswork out of finding the right dance shoes in Perth by offering guidance and equipment through our studio.

Dance Shoes:

Different styles require different shoes. We ensure our students have the correct footwear. Here’s what you need to know about shoes and gear for classes at Kalamunda Performers:

Ballet Shoes:

Pink for girls, black for boys. We recommend leather shoes as they suit our floors best. Full sole shoes are best for Inters and below to help build foot strength. Older students may wear split soles for more flexibility. Shoes should fit snugly (not tight), with no excess fabric. Toes should move freely—not crunched. We’re happy to help with sizing to allow room to grow while maintaining a good fit.

Tap Shoes:

For younger tappers, we use buckle or Velcro strap taps (usually tan for girls, black for boys). Older tappers use lace-up oxford style tap shoes. It’s important the taps are secure and the shoes fit well to produce clear sound.

Jazz Shoes:

Slip-on tan jazz shoes (for girls) or black (for boys) are standard. These are soft, fitted and split-sole shoes that allow pointed toes. We advise trying on sizes as jazz shoes often run differently from street shoe sizing.

Hip Hop Sneakers:

While not a specialized dance shoe, we do ask for a dedicated pair of clean sneakers for hip hop class. Many dancers choose a trendy high-top or street sneaker look. Key is to have shoes that bend, support, and preferably aren’t worn outdoors.

Lyrical/Contemporary Footwear:

Often danced barefoot, but some dancers wear half-sole “turners” or foot thongs to protect the ball of the foot while turning. These are optional and we can advise if your dancer might need them.

Acro Shoes:

No shoes required for our younger dancers. Pre Inters up require acro shoes.

Other Gear & Accessories:

Tights:

We stock flesh-toned or pink tights for ballet and tan footed tights for jazz/tap. These are durable dance tights that withstand the stretch and stress of classes and performances.

Hair Supplies:

For our ballerinas especially, a proper bun is important. We have bun kits (hairnets, pins, etc.) available for purchase. We also encourage dancers to keep extra hair ties and bobby pins in their dance bag – we usually have some on hand for emergencies too!

Dance Bags:

Keeping shoes and gear organized is easier with a dance bag. We have cute KP branded sport bags and backpacks for all ages. It helps dancers keep all their stuff together (and less likely to lose shoes!). At KP Mini’s, we have all the Ready Set Dance Merchandise available.

Stretch & Strength Tools:

For older dancers, we sometimes bring in tools like resistance bands (for stretching and strengthening). This is a small cost and we have them on hand at the studio.

All uniform items can be sourced through our studio or trusted retailers. If your dancer needs new shoes at anytime, we’re happy to help—just come a little earlier to class, and we can fit them on the spot. For acro shoes, a specialist visits in Term 3 to provide professional fittings ahead of Showcase.

Why Proper Gear Matters:

The right shoes support proper technique (imagine trying to point your toes in sneakers – eek!) and help prevent injury. Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters or trips, so we’re quite particular about getting a good fit. Similarly, attire like fitted clothing and tights allow teachers to see alignment and also give dancers the freedom to move fully.

If you’re unsure about any equipment or need advice on what to buy, we’re always here to help. You can visit our Shop at the studio or shoot us an email. We’ll ensure you have everything needed so you or your dancer can step into class with confidence – and the right shoes!
