Dance Uniforms – What to Wear

Having the right attire helps students feel like dancers and allows them to move properly and safely. At Kalamunda Performers, we have a simple dress code for each class to create a neat, professional look and ensure equal footing (literally!) for all students. If you’re looking for dance uniforms in Perth, we provide everything you need through our studio shop.

Uniform by Class/Style:

Ballet:

Girls wear a leotard, with ballet pink tights and ballet shoes. A wrap skirt may be worn for older grades. Hair in a bun. Boys wear a fitted singlet, t-shirt or leotard, black dance shorts or leggings, and ballet shoes with socks.

Jazz:

KP black leotard, crop or tank top paired with black dance shorts or leggings. Tan jazz shoes for girls, black jazz shoes for boys. Hair in a ponytail or bun.

Tap:

Similar base to jazz (black leotard/top and shorts/leggings). Tan tap shoes for girls, black tap shoes for boys (with socks). For younger tappers, velcro or buckle taps; for older, lace-up oxford style.

Hip Hop:

KP branded tee or any comfortable t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants (not too baggy for safety). Clean sneakers reserved for dance (no street dirt on our floors, please!). Hair to be pulled off the face, neat and tidy.

Contemporary/Lyrical:

A leotard or form-fitting top with dance shorts/leggings. Convertible tights (footed/footless as needed). Typically danced barefoot or in half-sole lyrical shoes. Hair secured away from face.

Acro:

Form-fitting activewear – leotard or tank with shorts/leggings. Bare feet for younger dancers, acro shoes for our older dancers. Hair tied up off the face up. No loose clothing or jewelry for safety during tumbling.

Musical Theatre:

Comfortable dancewear (similar to jazz dress code). Jazz shoes are generally used. Sometimes character shoes for older performers if needed for a routine.

Dance Abilities:

Flexible dress code – whatever is comfortable for the dancer, as long as they can move freely. Many opt for our KP t-shirt and shorts/leggings. We can adapt based on sensory needs (e.g., allowing a preferred t-shirt). Soft-soled shoes or sneakers are fine.

We ask that all students adhere to the dress code as it:

  • Allows teachers to see alignment and technique to give corrections (baggy clothing can hide bad habits).
  • Prevents distractions in class (when everyone matches, focus stays on dancing).
  • Fosters unity and studio pride – dancers feel like part of the team when they wear the KP uniform!

How to Get Your Uniform:

All required uniform pieces are available through our studio shop. We have sizing samples and can help fit your child to ensure everything is just right. If you need an item we don’t stock, we’ll happily recommend a local dancewear store that carries it.

Please label all pieces (especially those ballet shoes – they all look alike!) to avoid mix-ups. And remember, dancers should carry their shoes and small items in a dance bag so nothing gets lost.

If you ever have questions about the uniform or dress code – for instance, what to wear in winter for warmth – just ask. We’re here to help make sure your dancer feels comfortable and ready for class.

With the right uniform on, your child will be set to dance their heart out in style!
