Tap dancing is all about rhythm, timing, and making music with your feet! Our tap dance classes in Perth welcome boys and girls who can’t help but stomp, shuffle, and slide. Kalamunda Performers’ tap program introduces students to both the classic Broadway style of tap and more contemporary street tap (think Tap Dogs). It’s a fantastic way to develop coordination and musicality in a fun, energetic setting.
Dancers learn tap fundamentals like shuffles, tap steps, ball-changes, and digs, gradually building up to more complex combinations.
We explore both the classic style (inspired by legends like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly) and street style tap which is more modern and hard-hitting. This gives students a well-rounded tap education.
Tap is essentially percussion. Students train their ear to stay on beat and create crisp, clear sounds. They’ll be clapping, snapping, and counting music as much as they’re dancing!
As they progress, tappers get to experiment with creating their own rhythms and steps, fostering creativity. Plus, we often play rhythmic games that keep classes light-hearted and enjoyable.
Tap classes are available for various ages at KP. Younger kids start with basic steps and simple routines to child-friendly songs, while our teen tap classes tackle faster footwork and intricate rhythms. Tap is a wonderful complement to other dance styles – many students pair tap with jazz or musical theatre classes to broaden their skills.
All you need is a pair of tap shoes and a smile to get started!
Check out our timetable for tap class schedules. If you’re not sure which level to join, contact us – we’ll be happy to assist. Once you’re ready, enrol online and start tapping away at Kalamunda Performers.
